Help From Our Advisors

Ward Leonard was our generous sponsor for ExpoFest and Phone Shield.

Ward Leonard provided us with our product review. The Mechanical and Quality Engineering Team evaluated our Phone Hammock and Phone Case Add-ons. They were impressed with our design and unique approach to problem solving.

One of the points of emphasis from Ward Leonard was to research the amount of heat a charging cell phone has to prevent any possibility of fire. Our research shows that our product is safe for the general public.

David Mazzarelli Owner of Commercial Sewing guided us in the development of the phone hammock.

He discussed the different methods of manufacturing cloth products, as well as where is the best place to manufacture our products. We discussed the pros and cons of producing our Phone Hammock in America, China, and Mexico where Commercial Sewing currently has plants.

David gave our class a presentation on the career paths available in engineering and Commercial Sewing. He also presented the products and services his company provides on a daily basis to Yamaha, Polaris, Arctic Cat, John Deere, Kawasaki, BRP, Bryant Boats, and Supreme Industries.

He offered advice on our design project along the way. We will be touring the Commercial Sewing Manufacturing Facility after ExpoFest.

Ben Veilleux from Been Printed LLC acted as our marketing and social media advisor.

We worked with Ben on our marketing plan for our display booth. We discussed our logo design, booth banner, and

t-shirts for Expo Fest. There were several variations of these designs as shown in our prototype section of the website.

Ben also acted as our advisor for our Phone Shield Logo on our Phone Hammock. We discussed the differences in production time and costs for screenprinting and embroidery.

Our team also worked with Ben on the trade booth layout, give-aways, and t-shirt raffle.

When our team decided not to design phone cases due to the high cost of design and inventory, we focused on a new path. We decided to make attachments for the back of the phone or phone cases that attach by temporary, but durable means.

This allows us to reach a wider range of customers. Our phone attachments can be placed on the back of any phone or almost any phone case by using 3M removeabel adhesive tape.

Matt Gilbert and Dan Miller from the Binding Source/3M helped us select the proper adhesive for our Phone Shield Attachments.

Susan Minicucci-Seamstress

Susan Minicucci, our schools business manager, offered to help our team with sewing our prototypes, making our dream come to life. She worked with us on how to layout cloth designs and allow extra material for the folds.

She created the two final prototypes shown here. You can see Susan explaining the layout process with our team. She was very helpful in creating our prototypes on time.

Tom Walsh - Carpentry Instructor

Our team designed a table top display for our Expo Fest trade booth. We decided to look at different materials and wood was affordable and the best looking.

One of our team members, Austin Ferrier designed our display box to demonstrate the Phone Hammock. We also decided to make our display box multi use with the hinges on the top. This allows us to use the box for storing our give-aways for Expo Fest. The angled back gave the design an eye pleasing look.

The blue prints were taken down to our Carpentry Shop where the design was reviewed and approved by Mr. Walsh.

You can see the 3D model of our table top display in the picture below.

Joanne Girardin - English Instructor

Mrs. Joanne Girardin acted as our website and Launchpad editor for proper grammar. Ben Veilleux from Been Printed reinforced the importance of correct spelling on promotional items.

Mrs. Girardin taught us to proofread our work. She also instructed us on how to peer edit our work.

Ray Tanguay - Engineering Technology Teacher

IMG_2047.JPG

Our instructor, Mr. Ray Tanguay, acted as our customer for the design of the Phone Hammock from Phone Shield. We set a table of deliverables for our design process and had to record our daily progress for grading. In the picture shown, you see see our design team explaining the features of Phone Hammock.

When we were stuck in the engineering design process, we would reach out for help. Mr. Tanguay stepped back as a teacher and acted as an advisor to let the sophomores take over the Skills21 Project. This allowed us to learn on our own and learn even more about Engineering from this project and experience.

Mike Pace - EdAdvance

Mike Pace, our EdAdvance advisor, guided us through the process of using LaunchPad, our deliverable dates for Skills21, and kept us posted from emails and visits to our school to complete our goal and make our journey an enjoyable experience.

Pam Hill - Math Teacher

Pam Hill, our Expert Seamstress, taught our group members how to use the sewing machine with ease and teach us how to be safe with the equipment we are using.

She also acted as our supervisor while sewing our extra prototypes and our Pre-Production Prototypes for our team to have on them at Expo Fest.
